Gene Drive to Extinction?

This ominous warning about gene drive technology designed to exterminate species like malaria-spreading insects isn’t just applicable to insects – perhaps this is why the military is funding research.  Story below via Zerohedge.com

Gene drive technology can delete disrupt, or modify genes. Gene drives can only affect sexually reproducing species, not viruses or bacteria.

Modify a gene into a version you want to change how a life form functions.

Design it to replace the matching gene in that gene pair that would normally be passed on 50% of the time – with a copy of itself – the modified gene.

Now the modified gene will be passed on 100% of the time.

It won’t take long (20 generations or so) for the entire population to have this gene, depending on how many specimens are initially modified and released into the general population.  For humanity this could take over 500 years, but for fruit flies this could happen within weeks.

What if that gene is designed to be dormant until it gets the right message to activate?

What if activation means death?
